Day 55

And just like everybody else in Brooklyn, she dreams of spring, even though she's never known it, even though all she's ever known is winter with its crunch of snow and screaming tea kettles. I try to tell her about spring: how the layers peel off and the birds go wild, how the cherry blossoms explode and the sun never seems to set, but she wails, inconsolably, so certain it'll be winter forever, so sure we'll be sitting in this house staring out the windows until we're as old and gray as the sky. How can you believe what you've never known? Sunflowers, I tell her, as big as your head! And tulips--everywhere--the streets littered with their petals. But she is tired and unbelieving, so I bounce her, rock her, bounce her. Hush, I say, and over and over I tell her, spring will be here soon, hoping she believes me, hoping I'm right.

Spring is coming, sweet Nicole and sweet Eva Jane, I promise!! We will soon be able to go on walks without being bundled up and your mama will make everything so very special as she sees spring and summer through your tiny eyes. There will be a time soon when we can take you to our favorite place, the beach. You will be a beach lover like your mama and me. We will build sandcastles and sand angels. I can't wait!!!
Love,
Nana
by the way, cute cap!! I want another picture in your headband I bought you and some of the little outfits I bought! Can't wait to see you, hold you and introduce you to your rambunctious aunt and uncles.

It does seem awfully far away, and with the temperature dropping again today, it seems a little unbearable. But we can bear it. And then spring will come and we'll wear dresses and sit in the park and watch blossoms fall. Do you remember when we were walking in Princeton and you said, "the whole idea of "a small world," seems so sad to me. And Eva was on the way and we decided it was because everything was expanding? I was thinking of that this morning. How does it feel now? Small or large?

She's so beautiful! I can't wait to meet her. I loovvveee this picture. Randy and I watched a movie last night, and I spent the entire time working on Eva's baby blanket. It made me think of y'all. I am going to try to get up to NYC over Spring Break (March 9-13). It all depends on money. I hate money. It's such a killjoy! Anyhoo, if I do, we have to spend a day together. You, me, and Eva-bird.
